New Video Highlights West Valley Demolition Milestone

A new video released by the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) highlights the significant progress in the cleanup efforts by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) and their contractor. The video marks the halfway point in the demolition of the Main Plant Process Building, showcasing the dedicated work of EM and CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV) teams.

The video features insights from experts with over 200 years of combined experience in nuclear decommissioning and environmental cleanup. WVDP Director Bryan Bower uses the video to express gratitude to the employees for their commitment to safety and adherence to regulations throughout the project. He reflects on the journey, noting that the process began 20 years ago with the deactivation and decontamination of the Main Plant. The dedicated team worked meticulously, removing contaminated equipment to reach this milestone.

Jason Casper, President of CHBWV, acknowledges the team’s achievements in reaching the 50% completion mark in the demolition process. The Main Plant Process Building, known for its complexity, has been a significant challenge, with some employees having spent their entire careers working in and around it.

The ongoing demolition aims to further reduce environmental risks and prepare the site for the next cleanup phase. The project is expected to conclude in fiscal year 2025, starting this October. The video features subject matter experts who provide technical support and oversight, ensuring the work is carried out safely.

Stephen Bousquet, WVDP’s Assistant Director of the Office of Project Management, praises the skilled workforce for their dedication to protecting public health and the environment. The project employs best practices, including detailed engineering and planning, to ensure safe and effective demolition. Casper emphasizes the teamwork involved, highlighting the collective efforts of EM, CHBWV, union workers, and subcontractors in achieving this critical milestone.
