Virginia Tech Begins Study on Construction Worker Helmet Safety

Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab has embarked on a new study aimed at evaluating safety helmets specifically designed for construction workers. This initiative comes in response to the federal government’s recent recommendation that construction workers should opt for safety helmets over traditional hard hats. The rationale behind this recommendation is that hard hats often lack chin straps and can easily slip off during falls, potentially leading to severe injuries.

Despite this recommendation, there is a notable gap in research regarding the effectiveness of different safety helmets. To address this, Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab has partnered with several construction industry organizations, including the John R. The goal is to gather objective data that can help contractors across the country make informed decisions when purchasing safety helmets.

Raffi Elchemmas, Executive Director of safety, health, and risk management with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, emphasized the importance of this study. He pointed out that construction workers are most vulnerable to serious injuries from falls or being struck by objects. By providing unbiased data, the study aims to enhance the safety of workers in the construction industry.

Steve Rowson, the director of the Helmet Lab, shared that his team will be focusing on how well different helmets can protect against these types of injuries. The study will involve examining real-world injury scenarios and recreating them in the lab using dummies to simulate the impact on workers.

This research marks a significant shift for Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab, which has previously concentrated on helmets for sports and recreational activities. The team’s experience and expertise in these areas will now be applied to improving safety for construction workers, a group that faces substantial risks on the job.

The ultimate aim of the study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how various safety helmets perform in protecting construction workers from head injuries. By generating reliable and unbiased data, the study hopes to guide contractors in selecting the most effective helmets, potentially saving lives and reducing the severity of injuries in the construction industry.
