SH29 Closure: Bay of Plenty to Waikato Highway to Close for Maintenance

State Highway 29 (SH29) over the Kaimai Range is set for its third scheduled closure for maintenance, spanning four nights from Sunday, July 14, to Wednesday, July 17, between 8 PM and 3:30 AM. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has announced these closures to allow contractors to carry out asphalt renewals and routine maintenance tasks, such as clearing drains, sign maintenance, and road marking.

On the western side, the closure points will be at the SH29/24 and SH29/28 intersections, while on the Bay of Plenty side, it will be closed at the SH29/Cambridge Rd intersection. Significant detours will be in place, and travelers are advised to check the NZTA Journey Planner, allow extra time for their journey, or delay travel during the closure periods.

Roger Brady, NZTA Waka Kotahi Regional Manager for Maintenance and Operations for Waikato and Bay of Plenty, emphasized the safety benefits of a full closure for both crews and road users. He highlighted the importance of SH29 as a crucial link between New Zealand’s largest port and the Golden Triangle of Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga. The route is used daily by approximately 14,000 vehicles, including several thousand heavy vehicles, making its maintenance vital for ensuring safety and accessibility.

Brady mentioned that the decision for the closure schedule was made in collaboration with freight operators and roading contractors to minimize disruption. This coordination allows regular road users, including freight operators, to plan accordingly and reduce inconvenience.

While acknowledging the short-term disruption, Brady noted that the maintenance would ultimately provide a more reliable and safer route over the Kaimai Range. Emergency services will have access throughout the closure, and residents can reach their properties from the respective side of the closure points.

Further closures are anticipated later in the year, and the current maintenance timetable will be updated as needed.
