Persimmon has unveiled a unique three-storey model home at its Space4 factory in Castle Bromwich, West Midlands, aimed at testing innovative construction techniques and training its workforce and suppliers. Built using modern methods of construction, the home showcases Persimmon’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability in building practices.
One standout feature of the model home is its Mauer brick facades, which were pre-fitted to a Space4 timber frame at the factory before assembly on-site. This approach drastically reduced the time required to complete the watertight superstructure to just five days, compared to the traditional 8-10 weeks needed for masonry construction. Such efficiency highlights the potential for these methods to streamline housing development on a large scale.
Inside the house, each room demonstrates a different stage of construction. The tour begins with a fully finished living room and progresses through spaces that expose water and electrical installations, as well as energy-efficient wall and roof insulation. Throughout the home, detailed signage provides insights into product details, building regulations, and company-specific guidelines, making it an interactive training and demonstration tool.
Persimmon aims to use the model home to equip its contractors and suppliers with the knowledge and skills to adopt these advanced construction techniques. This initiative aligns with broader industry trends, as the UK government pushes for 1.5 million new homes over the next five years and prepares to implement Future Homes Standards in 2025.
By focusing on faster, more sustainable building practices, Persimmon positions itself as a leader in construction innovation. The model home is a tangible step towards meeting future regulatory requirements while addressing the demand for high-quality, energy-efficient housing.
