Hutchison Ports BEST has received 14 new automated cranes (ASCs) from the Finnish company Konecranes as part of the Port of Barcelona’s expansion efforts. These new ASCs will boost the terminal’s storage capacity by 25%, increasing the number of automated blocks from 27 to 34 in the coming months.
Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST, highlighted that this investment will enhance both the operational and storage capacities of the terminal. He emphasized that the upgrade will also improve the quality of service for maritime and inland operations.
The cranes will be assembled and tested over the next few weeks, with the first new block expected to be operational by September. The seventh block is anticipated to be in use by early 2025.
Aligned with Hutchison Ports Group’s commitment to sustainability, these new cranes are electric and rail-mounted. This focus on environmental efficiency is a key component of their efforts to develop a green and effective terminal at the Port of Barcelona.
Currently, the terminal features 13 super post-Panamax quay cranes, 54 ASCs, two rail-mounted gantries (RMGs), and 40 shuttle carriers. The facility spans 80 hectares and includes a berth that is 1,500 meters long with a depth of 16.5 meters.
